Immunize South Dakota is sharing the following statement in response to recent changes to federal childhood immunization guidance:
Recent changes announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention risk undermining clear and consistent guidance around childhood immunization. While the science supporting routine childhood vaccines has not changed, shifts in how recommendations are presented may create uncertainty for families and healthcare providers and could lead to delayed or missed vaccinations—weakening protections against serious and preventable diseases at a time when outbreaks are occurring in parts of the country.
Immunize South Dakota is particularly concerned by comparisons between U.S. vaccine guidance and that of other countries without accounting for key differences in population size, healthcare access, disease risk, and vaccine delivery systems. Immunization recommendations should reflect the realities of the United States and be informed by transparent review of U.S.-specific data and expert expertise.
We support a science-based, consistent approach to childhood immunization that helps parents and clinicians make informed decisions and protects children when they are most vulnerable. Immunize South Dakota encourages families to rely on trusted healthcare providers and guidance from organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics as we work together to strengthen community health.
